Pericles for Ukraine

Flute Theatre change the lives of refugee families and autistic individuals displaced by war.

“Ukrainian children began to work through psychological traumas with which they have been struggling since this terrible war started. Flute’s original therapy was carried out in the form of a play and allowed the children to participate in the activities which resembled fun adventures, leaving a positive impression on children of different ages”
Lidiya, Ukrainian Teacher

In May this year we travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria to work with Ukrainian refugee families, performing our Pericles with them to alleviate their trauma and create a unique space for wounds to heal and feelings to be shared. This autumn, we will be travelling back to Sofia to continue the project for an extended period.

We are committed to bringing our Pericles to audiences where the need is greatest. The refugee families who we performed with have all asked us to return and more families are arriving in Sofia every week. The need is urgent and we can meet that need with your help.

In Ukraine, my son was not admitted into the theatre club with the excuse that “the theatre is too difficult for children with Down syndrome”…

But in Sofia, we met Kelly Hunter and her Flute Theatre. And Vitaly finally got admitted! And he did not just act in the theatre! His very heart was beating in unison with Shakespeare’s Pericles! He projected himself into different characters together with Josh, his guide to the world of the theatre, who worked true wonders. I admired all the actors with whom not only were there no language barriers but all the barriers existing at the beginning dissipated by the end, leaving only happy faces and happily beating hearts.

I watched and realised that the theatre is not only and not so much the stage. The theatre is acceptance, it is support, it is self-expression for everyone, and real inclusion.

I very much look forward to continuing to get to know each other and to the possibility of further development of Kelly Hunter’s theatre workshop in Sofia”.

Hello! I want to express my immense gratitude to Flute Theater from London, headed by Kelly Hunter, an outstanding British actress. Markiyan and I got an unforgettable, completely new experience, which is hard to forget and we would love to repeat it. All the actors are simply wonderful, very bright, sincere, open people. You can immediately feel how the entire team love their work, love children, and give their all with so much love. After talking with the actors, you get a lot of energy and confidence that everything is possible, that you need to work hard, love your little one very much, believe in your child and everything will definitely work out. A huge thank you to everyone for the invaluable experience, patience, warmth, every smile, and open heart. I really hope that there will be an opportunity for us to meet again. ❤

Dear friends! I would like to share my impressions with all of you. My name is Maria and I am 60 years old. This is the first time I have seen such generous, open-minded, and warm love for children. Not because they are smaller or bigger, intelligent or beautiful, but because they are here, right here, close to you. And this wondrous contact is in tune with your heartbeat. All people need to see and feel it to understand what love is like. What wonderful actors Kelly Hunter has cast. They are so radiant. I remember them all. They are forever in my heart. It was a great joy to meet them and talk to such heaven-born, blessed actors.

But in Sofia, thanks to Darya Lazarenko, we met Kelly Hunter and her Flute Theatre. And Vitaly finally got admitted! And he did not just act in the theatre! His very heart was beating in unison with Shakespeare’s Pericles! He projected himself into different characters together with Josh, his guide to the world of the theatre, who worked true wonders. I admired all the actors of Flute Theatre, in communication with whom not only there was no language barrier, they were so professional in helping their partners to open up, that all the barriers existing at the beginning dissipated by the end, leaving only happy faces and happily beating hearts.

I watched and realised that the theatre is not only and not so much the stage. The theatre is acceptance, it is support, it is self-expression for everyone, and real inclusion.

Many thanks to Kelly and her amazing team for the new perspective and hope. See you again soon!

This theatre’s production is wonderful art therapy for children with special needs. We witnessed the children’s reaction and their desire to be part of the show. Moreover, the children memorized the songs and greetings and have been using them for several weeks. I believe that such an emotional performance is useful for getting an insight into the emotional state of special children in everyday life.

Flute Theatre won the children’s hearts. The emotional interaction that the actors managed to establish in the group had a great impact on the children’s socialisation and self-expression. The theatre helped the closed, clamped-down children come out of their shells, gave them an opportunity to open out, overcome their complexes, and reveal the potential of feelings and thoughts. Ukrainian children began to work through psychological traumas with which they have been struggling since this terrible war started.
