Professor Michael Dobson

Professor Michael DobsonI am primarily an academic theatre historian with a specialism in Shakespeare — I have been Director of the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon and Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Birmingham since 2011 — but I have also written extensively about present-day performance, in the Anglophone world and beyond, and I have provided advice and programme notes to companies including the Moscow Arts Theatre, the Beijing People’s Arts Theatre, TR Warszawa, Mokwha Repertory, the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Sheffield Crucible, and the RSC. I have become increasingly interested in Shakespeare beyond mainstream professional performance (see e.g. my book *Shakespeare and Amateur Performance*, Cambridge, 2011), and I have been enthusiastically involved in Kelly Hunter’s work with excluded audiences since 2001.
